What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.): One major variety is the 1865-S $10 Gold Liberty Head Eagle with an 1865 stuck over an inverted 186. This was actually a blunder caused by the original engraver of the coin. A full 3-digit "186" punch was used to save time on engraving - but it was originally struck upside down before the "5" was to be added. Once the mistake was discovered - the engraver struck the "186" right-side up and then added the "5". This resulted in the "8" struck over an inverted "6" - the "6" was stuck over the inverted "8" - and the "5" was stuck over the inverted "1". Only the 865 portion of the date covers the inverted 186.
