What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.): There were a few major varieties of the 1798 $5 Gold Turban Head Half Eagle. This variety features a Large "8" in the 1798 date and 14 stars on the reverse. There were two major varieties of the 1798 date on the obverse of the coin. One variety had the Small "8" and the other had a Large "8". The Large "8" is noticeably wider. Exclusive to the Large "8" variety - there are two major sub-varieties for the reverse of the coin. One variety features 13 stars above the eagle while the other had 14 stars.
