What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.): There were a few major varieties of the 1797 $5 Gold Half Eagle. The most common variety is the 1797/5 Overdate which features a 1797 date struck over a 1795 date. The underlying "5" is very clearly visible under the "7".
